Artist: Billy Joel
Title: Turnstiles
Genre: Rock
Release Date: 1976/2014
Label: Columbia Records
Duration: 36:51
Quality: FLAC 96kHz/24bit

Recorded: Recorded in January 1976 at Ultrasonic Recording Studios in Hempstead, New York

Turnstiles is Billy Joel’s fourth studio album, originally released in May of 1976. The platinum album was written for Joel’s return to New York City after residing in California. Originally recorded under producer James William Guercio with individuals playing from Elton John’s band, the record did not satisfy Joel and he took it upon himself to produce his own alternative version. He rerecorded the album in New York with his own touring band, marking the first time they appeared in one of his albums. Turnstiles features hits “New York State of Mind,” “Say Goodbye to Hollywood,” and “James”.

There’s a reason Turnstiles begins with the Spector-esque epic “Say Goodbye to Hollywood.” Shortly after Streetlife Serenade, Joel ditched California — and, by implication, sensitive Californian soft rock from sensitive singer/songwriters — for his hometown of New York. “Say Goodbye to Hollywood” was a celebration of his move, a repudiation of his past, a fanfare for a new beginning, which is exactly what Turnstiles was. He still was a singer/songwriter — indeed, “Summer, Highland Falls” was his best ballad to date, possibly his best ever — but he decided to run with his musical talents, turning the record into a whirlwind tour of pop styles, from Sinatra to Springsteen. There’s little question that the cinematic sprawl of Born to Run had an effect on Turnstiles, since it has a similar widescreen feel, even if it clocks in at only eight songs. The key to the record’s success is variety, the way the album whips from the bouncy, McCartney-esque “All You Wanna Do Is Dance” to the saloon song “New York State of Mind”; the way the bitterly cynical “Angry Young Man” gives way to the beautiful “I’ve Loved These Days” and the surrealistic apocalyptic fantasy “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway).” No matter how much stylistic ground Joel covers, he’s kept on track by his backing group. He fought to have his touring band support him on Turnstiles, going to the lengths of firing his original producer, and it was clearly the right move, since they lend the album a cohesive feel. Turnstiles may not have been a hit, but it remains one of his most accomplished and satisfying records, clearly paving the way to his twin peaks of the late ’70s, The Stranger and 52nd Street.

Ozzy Osbourne finds a permanent replacement for Randy Rhoads in Jake E. Lee, a more standard metal guitarist without Rhoads’ neo-classical compositional ability or stylistic flair. Still, Osbourne and his band turn in a competent, workmanlike set of heavy metal featuring the crunching title track, whose video (featuring Osbourne dressed as a werewolf) became popular on MTV. Unfortunately, substance abuse problems would prevent Osbourne from releasing another record up to the standards of Bark at the Moon for nearly the rest of the decade. ~ Steve Huey

Blizzard of Ozz is Ozzy Osbourne’s debut solo album. The record was originally released in 1980, a year after the heavy metal vocalist was dismissed from Black Sabbath. The record had major commercial success, was certified 4x Platinum in the U.S. The single “Crazy Train” peaked at number 9 on Billboard’s track list and has since become one of Osbourne’s signature songs.

Ozzy Osbourne’s solo debut Blizzard of Ozz was a masterpiece of neo-classical metal that, along with Van Halen’s first album, became a cornerstone of ’80s metal guitar. Upon its release, there was considerable doubt that Ozzy could become a viable solo attraction. Blizzard of Ozz demonstrated not only his ear for melody, but also an unfailing instinct for assembling top-notch backing bands. Onetime Quiet Riot guitarist Randy Rhoads was a startling discovery, arriving here as a unique, fully formed talent. Rhoads was just as responsible as Osbourne — perhaps even more so — for the album’s musical direction, and his application of classical guitar techniques and scales rewrote the rulebook just as radically as Eddie Van Halen had. Rhoads could hold his own as a flashy soloist, but his detailed, ambitious compositions and arrangements revealed his true depth, as well as creating a sense of doomy, sinister elegance built on Ritchie Blackmore’s minor-key innovations. All of this may seem to downplay the importance of Ozzy himself, which shouldn’t be the case at all. The music is a thoroughly convincing match for his lyrical obsession with the dark side (which was never an embrace, as many conservative watchdogs assumed); so, despite its collaborative nature, it’s unequivocally stamped with Ozzy’s personality. What’s more, the band is far more versatile and subtle than Sabbath, freeing Ozzy from his habit of singing in unison with the guitar (and proving that he had an excellent grasp of how to frame his limited voice). Nothing short of revelatory, Blizzard of Ozz deservedly made Ozzy a star, and it set new standards for musical virtuosity in the realm of heavy metal.

Down to Earth is Ozzy Osbourne’s eighth studio album and was released in October 2001. Produced by Tim Palmer and featuring the singles “Gets Me Through” and “Dreamer”, the album is Osbourne’s only studio album to feature bassist Robert Trujillo. The album peaked at #4 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Ozzy Osbourne’s eighth solo studio album, Down to Earth, shows the madman of rock relying on a supergroup of metal musicians to bring his sound together. Longtime Ozzy guitarist Zakk Wylde is back, this time with Suicidal Tendencies bassist Robert Trujillo and Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin supplying the rhythm. Despite the ever-changing world of heavy metal, Ozzy has a strangely timeless sound that he does not stray from on this record. Thick, heavy songs like “Gets Me Through” could really be on any Ozzy record after 1989 and fit in, but it is this bizarre reliability that keeps the album as listenable as it is. There are a few off moments, most specifically when it comes to the occasional murky production that muffles Wylde’s fiery guitar and Bordin’s drums. Producer Tim Palmer gives it more of a grunge sheen than a heavy metal sound, which does work on some tracks but takes a little of the punch out of songs like “Junkie.” Still, this has all the main ingredients of good Ozzy: a big fat Black Sabbath number (“Gets Me Through”), some wonderfully cheesy ballads (“Running Out of Time”), some tracks that can offend teenagers’ parents (“Facing Hell”), and the song about how darn crazy he is (“Alive”). Sure it may be predictable, but no one looks to Ozzy to pioneer new sounds. Anyone who liked Ozzy’s output from the ’90s will probably embrace this album with open arms, and anyone who does not like him will probably know to avoid this.

MEMOIRS OF A MADMAN serves as a career spanning audio release, featuring 17 of OZZY’s greatest hit singles compiled in one place for the first time in his career

OSBOURNE’s ongoing solo career spans four decades–as both a successful solo artist and as the lead singer of Black Sabbath–and his music is as relevant today as ever; it still resonates daily on TV, in movies, on radio and at stadium sports events. OZZY’s latest solo release–his tenth studio album, 2010’s Scream–debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard charts, featuring the No. 1 Mainstream Rock smash “Let Me Hear You Scream.”

OZZY immediately had the attention of fans of heavy music with rock staples “Crazy Train,” “Mr. Crowley” and “Flying High Again.” With the 1991 release No More Tears, OZZY continued his radio success with acclaimed and hugely successful singles “No More Tears” and the smash hit “Mama, I’m Coming Home.”

Released in 1991, No More Tears was produced by Duane Baron and John Purdell. It is the sixth studio album by Ozzy Osbourne and features the #2 hit single “Mama, I’m Coming Home” as well as the Grammy-winning track “I Don’t Want to Change the World”. It is one of Osbourne’s most successful albums, having been certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA. This edition features two bonus tracks.

Having been cleared earlier in the year in another lawsuit concerning the supposedly suicide-inducing subject matter of his music, Ozzy Osbourne reinvigorated his sound and expanded his following with his sixth studio album, No More Tears, in the fall of 1991. Finding more sympathetic producers in Duane Baron and John Purdell to replace Roy Thomas Baker (who had helmed his last effort, 1988’s No Rest for the Wicked), collaborating with Lemmy Kilmister of Motrhead on four songs, and retaining the services of guitarist Zakk Wylde, Osbourne brought his music into the ’90s. Songs like “Desire” and “S.I.N.” had an energetic, contemporary metal sound, and Osbourne effectively changed gears to turn out gentle ballads like “Mama, I’m Coming Home,” which gave him his first U.S. Top 40 hit on his own. Not cowed by his court cases, he wrote songs about child abuse (“Mr. Tinkertrain”) and serial murder (“No More Tears”) from the point of view of the criminals. But he also considered his own place in the general scheme of things in the tribute to the rock & roll lifestyle “Hellraiser” and the reflective “Road to Nowhere.” It all made for an unusually broad range of material, and the album returned him to the Top Ten and multi-platinum status.

01 — Mr. Tinkertrain

Things start to improve for Ozzy on No Rest for the Wicked, as Zakk Wylde replaces Jake E. Lee on guitar and Osbourne comes up with his best set since 1983. Again, it’s not quite up to the level of excellence his Blizzard of Ozz band achieved, but Osbourne sounds somewhat rejuvenated, and Wylde is a more consistently interesting guitarist than Lee. Highlights include “Miracle Man” (in which Ozzy gloats about the downfall of the TV preachers who had long attacked him as an agent of Satan) and the MTV hits “Crazy Babies” and “Breaking All the Rules”.

Ozzy Osbourne streamlines his approach to keep up with the emerging trend toward slick, radio-ready metal, but Ultimate Sin is largely unsuccessful, as the performances are flat and uninspired and the material lacks much variety. There are some good moments, including the single “Shot in the Dark,” but overall, Ultimate Sin is unable to push past the level of mediocrity.

Despite a never-ending succession of guitarists, Ozzy Osbourne never changed his basic musical attack over the years. There are slight differences between the records, with the only noticeable distinctions being the production fads of the time. Ozzmosis, his sixth solo studio album, isn’t all that different from his previous two records, No More Tears and No Rest for the Wicked, largely due to the still impressive skills of guitarist Zakk Wylde. However, even Wylde’s prowess is diluted by the slick, modern-rock conscious production by Michael Beinhorn (Soul Asylum). Occasionally, the guitar is synthesized, which is indicative of the album’s main flaw — on the surface, the music is hard and loud, but it actually sounds smooth and processed. Furthermore, there’s a distinct lack of fully formed songs and riffs, which is what really sinks the record. Osbourne can survive bad production — he has for most of his career — but he can’t survive without having anything to sing.

Everybody’s Talkin’ is the energy-packed sophomore album by the Tedeschi Trucks Band. It follows their GRAMMY Award-winning debut album, Revelator. This innovative blend of originals and spirited covers of rock, R&B and gospel classics captures the group’s roots-rich musical essence. Derek Trucks and TTB bandmate Oteil Burbridge recently were honored with a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award for their membership in The Allman Brothers Band. Standouts include Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight,” Bill Withers “Love Has Something Else To Say (with Kissing My Love)” and Joe Cocker’s “Darling Be Home Soon.” It reached #2 on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums.

The Tedeschi Trucks Band is an 11-piece ensemble made up of guitarist-vocalist Susan Tedeschi’s and guitarist Derek Trucks’ individual bands. They made their debut with 2011’s Grammy-winning Revelator, a sprawling collection that showcased funky R&B, gospel, blues, and scorching large band rock. Everybody’s Talkin’, a double disc, is a live offering from that supporting tour. Produced by Trucks, it includes live versions of some album tracks and six beautifully chosen covers; all its tunes are given extended, imaginatively arranged treatments. It’s an unusual live record because its balance of sonic precision and stage-born kinetics is perfect — this band transitions seamlessly between R&B, blues, rock, gospel, and jazz. These performances never succumb to mere jam band clichs. On disc one, “Midnight in Harlem” is introduced by a mini raga played as a slide solo by Trucks. The band enters gradually, and Tedeschi’s soulful vocal carries them all the way in. (Tedeschi is revealed, song after song — far beyond her solo records or even Revelator — to be among the truly great singers in modern blues and rock; by turns graceful and grainy, her expression reaches the spiritual in execution.) At over 11 minutes, the interplay between guitarists, Mike Mattison’s backing vocals, keyboards, and rhythm section are impeccable. Things get rowdier on “Learn How to Love,” with nasty guitar work by Tedeschi, and a burning tenor sax solo by Kebbi Williams. The horn section really pops in “Bound for Glory”; the exchange between the Burbridge brothers on bass and keys, with drummers Tyler Greenwell and J.J. Johnson, adds a knotty improv bridge where deep funk and blues grind together. The disc closes with an astonishing reading of John Sebastian’s “Darlin” Be Home Soon.” With horns tastefully accenting and underscoring lead vocals, Trucks’ slide solo stays melodically true, yet moves through the band’s shimmering groove into the stratosphere (and he does this throughout this album, over and over again, helping to elevate not only the tune, but the sense of groove, space, and texture). Disc two contains only four cuts but they’re all gems: Pearl Woods’ “That Did It” (a Bobby “Blue” Bland vehicle) is a down and gritty strut, with excellent, in-the-grain guitar work by Tedeschi. Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight” is a 15-minute soul rave-up with a beautiful jazz interlude and scat singing from Oteil Burbridge in its middle, followed by a wonderfully imagined slide solo by Trucks. It’s followed by the deep, horn-driven, wah-wah funk of “Love Has Something Else to Say” before closing with a stirring read of Sam Cooke’s “Wade in the Water.” It’s a spooky gospel-blues with gorgeous alternate lead vocals by Mark Rivers and Tedeschi. Everybody’s Talkin’ is what every live album should be: an accurate, exciting reflection of a band at its peak, playing full-throttle and providing plenty of surprises.

Let Me Get By features ten new, original songs that together stand as a testament to the hard work, independent spirit, and full-on commitment of the entire Tedeschi Trucks Band. The album’s artwork—a Mongolian golden eagle pictured a moment after flying from its handler’s glove—and even the album title itself reflect the sense of total dedication that serves as the driving force behind this recording. From that wellspring of dedication come the most powerful TTB recordings yet. Some songs you may have heard on stage in 2015, and some others that were deliberately held back for this occasion. Susan’s vocals and Derek’s guitar soar, tumble and glide through each song, as powerful as ever, even in the album’s most understated moments.

After 2013’s Made Up Mind, Tedeschi Trucks Band hit the road hard, racking up 200 dates in 2014. After Derek Trucks played the Allman Brothers Band’s final shows, and TTB’s parting with Sony, the 12-piece band and friends (including Doyle Bramhall II) entered their Swamp Raga Studios behind Trucks’ and Susan Tedeschi’s home, and began recording jam-style rehearsals; everyone was encouraged to contribute ideas, songs, etc. They’d break to work the road then return to record some more. The end result is Let Me Get By, produced by Trucks, recorded by Bobby Tis, and released by Fantasy. Jazz bassist Tim Lefebvre joined permanently (he was also part of David Bowie’s band on Blackstar), and Alecia Chakour was enlisted to balance Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers on backing vocals. The lineup is rounded out by keyboardist Kofi Burbridge, drummers Tyler Greenwell and J.J. Johnson, and a three-piece horn section. Trucks proves a fearless producer here. This collaboratively written ten-song set showcases the band’s skill at playing and composing through Southern soul, roots rock, blues, greasy funk, jazz, Indian classical, film music, and African and Brazilian polyrhythms. An obvious studio offering, it’s warm and resonant, yet crackling with energy and ideas. The feel is loose and grooving, the performances hot. Over TTB’s last two albums, Tedeschi has become comfortable as the lead singer of a large band. She’s almost iconic here, taking chances with phrasing, finding hidden spaces in lines and syllables, and emoting from the belly. She never oversells a song but always sings the hell out of it. (Check “Anyhow” if you want shivers.) She plays a mean guitar, too: her solo in the gritty, punchy, party funk number “Don’t Know What It Means” is a highlight. But everybody gets to shine here — Mattison with lead vocals on the Brechtian-esque carny rock of “Right on Time,” and the modal soul of “Crying Over You/Swamp Raga for Hozapfel, Lefebvre, Flute and Harmonium” — adding character and depth to TTB’s signature. Lefebvre’s syncopation and invention create new possibilities for harmonic and rhythmic dialogue. His bass pushes the funky dual drum breaks and biting electric piano and organ on the title cut, allowing roaring horns, soaring chorus vocals, and Trucks’ spiraling slide to collide with and flow through one another. The unusual meld of Memphis soul, Bollywood-style strings, Eastern electric slide, and strummed acoustic guitars creatively come together to support Tedeschi’s wrenching, affirmative vocal in the passionate “Hear Me. The rave-up dancefloor R&B in “I Want More” is guaranteed to put any party into overdrive. The meld of gospel, soul, doo wop, and blues rock on closer “In Every Heart” offers a Trucks’ solo that digs deep in the emotional grain to contrast with the sweet vibe. Never has TTB sounded so organic, relaxed, and free. Let Me Get By is the album this group has been striving for since their formation. You need this.

Made Up Mind is the highly anticipated follow-up to Tedeschi Trucks Band’s 2011 Grammy-winning debut Revelator and last year’s scorching live collection, Everybody’s Talkin’. Through unparalleled musicianship and a timeless, authentic sound, Made Up Mind proves that TTB is fast becoming a band for the ages.

Made Up Mind, the second studio album from the Tedeschi Trucks Band, contrasts considerably with Revelator in that it showcases the strength of an 11-piece band willing to experiment as they assimilate inspirations — from Stax, Muscle Shoals, Motown, Delaney & Bonnie, blues, and jazz — and incorporate their various experiences into a new whole. Co-produced by Derek Trucks and Jim Scott, there is an increased emphasis on songwriting and more sophisticated arrangements. Susan Tedeschi and Trucks invited friends to contribute to these songs, adding perspective and finesse; they include Doyle Bramhall II, John Leventhal, Gary Louris, Eric Krasno, and Sonya Kitchell. Tedeschi’s voice has developed into one of the most expressive in modern music; it’s become the band’s focal point, and she receives outstanding choral support from Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers. Trucks’ lead and slide guitar playing have evolved, creating new possibilities for the instrument; it remains the anchor of musical direction for this massive ensemble, which also boasts a horn section, keyboards, two drummers, and four alternating bassists. It always stands out, but only dominates when the song calls for it. The title track opener is a roaring blues-rock boogie. Tedeschi wails atop punchy gospel piano from Kofi Burbridge and a ripping slide guitar solo with horns blazing. A funky clavinet introduces the Sly Stone-inspired “Misunderstood.” Trucks’ silvery wah-wah guitar drives chunky horn fills, a grooving B-3, and tough vocal exchanges between the vocalists. Tedeschi and Saunders Sermons duet on the fingerpopping soul tune “Part of Me,” which recalls Motown’s early years; his sweet falsetto is the perfect foil for her grainy contralto. Trucks’ guitar fills accent the call and response vocals in the second half, and the Northern soul melody is contrasted by a grittier Stax-style horn chart. The ballads — the spiritually poignant “It’s So Heavy” and the devastating, broken love song “Sweet and Low” — with their subtleties and canny arrangements display a real TTB strength. It is no mean feat to deliver music this intimate and personal with such a large ensemble. On the rockers, everybody is engaged at a heightened level, as in the funky, grimy, blues-rock strut of “Whiskey Legs” and the off-the-rails roil of “The Storm.” On the latter, hard rock, blues, and jazz intertwine, and Trucks gets the opportunity to spiral off into the exploratory void. Closer “Calling Out to You” is simply his National steel guitar caressing Tedeschi’s voice in a tender love song. Made Up Mind is tight; it maintains the gritty, steamy, Southern heart displayed on Revelator, but the growth in songwriting, arrangement, and production is immeasurable. Everything these players have assimilated throughout their individual careers is filtered through a group consciousness. When it expresses itself musically, historical and cultural lineages are questioned and answered incessantly in the tension of their dialogue, creating a sound that is not only instantly recognizable, but offers a nearly limitless set of sonic possibilities.

The Allman Brothers’ second album, Idlewild South has been remastered from its original tapes. This mixture of chunky grooves and sophisticated textures showcases both Gregg Allman’s and Dickey Betts’ skills as songwriters. This classic album includes the hit “Midnight Rider.” The Deluxe edition adds 12 tracks not included on the original release. Bonus tracks are a combination of live tracks, studio cuts and outtakes.

If you’re going to listen to the Allman Brothers, make sure you have the first four records. The band made The Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South, At Fillmore East, and three-fourths of Eat a Peach with its original lineup, before Duane Allman’s fatal motorcycle accident in 1971. The Tom Dowd-produced Idlewild South, their second album, comes off with a little less ferocity than their debut — which is perhaps the result of reaching for new sounds the second time around. “Revival,” the album’s opener, introduces Dickey Betts as a composer. The countrified flavor of his songs gives an indication of where the band will head in the post-Duane era. Betts’ other contribution to Idlewild South is the instrumental “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” a centerpiece of the Fillmore East recordings. Gregg’s “Please Call Home” and “Midnight Rider” are built around piano and acoustic guitar, respectively, and have a different feel than the band’s usual twin Les Paul-and-Hammond sound. That sound is showcased in the balance of Gregg’s tunes, however: the funky blues of “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin'” (with Thom Doucette on harmonica) and “Leave My Blues at Home.” The album is also notable for the rollicking version of Willie Dixon’s “Hoochie Coochie Man,” with the only vocal bassist Berry Oakley (who died in a motorcycle accident one year after Duane) ever recorded with the group. Though overall it packs less punch than The Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South is all the more impressive for its mixture of chunky grooves and sophisticated textures.

Revengepop? The prog Karen Carpenter? Barbra Streisand on acid? Bat For Lashes on a bookbinge? Whatever way you choose to describe “Confessions of A Romance Novelist”, the debut album by The Anchoress, one thing’s for sure: it packs a punch. Catherine Anne Davies (aka The Anchoress) sums up the album’s overall concept as “deconstructing normative ideas of love and romance”, with each song sung by a different character.

Draper helped to capture the collection of songs on which Catherine played a variety of instruments, including piano, guitar, flute, omnichord, mellotron, wurlitzer, glockenspiel, and celeste, as well as multitracking up to 25 vocal harmonies on some of the songs. Yet, recording was interrupted by a series of events that threatened to derail the project completely. She says: “This has been made on a wing and a prayer, lots of favours, one car crash, one death, one broken hand, and a lot of patience on so many parts. Stir in 3 jobs, 4 studios, 2 arrests, 3 pianos, 40 songs and 1 very patient enginee… and you get some way to understanding what a long road it has been”.
You can hear this distilled in the Prince inspired feminist manifesto ‘One For Sorrow’ that questions the concept of marriage. There’s a different take on obsessional love in the album’s title track, where the album’s narrator ironically references her “bedroom shrine to Margaret Thatcher”. Meanwhile, ‘You And Only You’ an anthemic ode to being better off alone features the distinctive operatic indiewail of Mansun’s Paul Draper, who coproduced the album with Catherine.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin – The Inner Mounting Flame (1971/2012) [Pop, HDTracks, FLAC 96kHz/24bit]

The Inner Mounting Flame is Mahavishnu Orchestra’s debut studio album originally released in 1971 by Columbia Records. The jazz-rock group performed tracks composed by leader John McLaughlin.

This is the album that made John McLaughlin a semi-household name, a furious, high-energy, yet rigorously conceived meeting of virtuosos that, for all intents and purposes, defined the fusion of jazz and rock a year after Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew breakthrough. It also inadvertently led to the derogatory connotation of the word fusion, for it paved the way for an army of imitators, many of whose excesses and commercial panderings devalued the entire movement. Though much was made of the influence of jazz-influenced improvisation in the Mahavishnu band, it is the rock element that predominates, stemming directly from the electronic innovations of Jimi Hendrix. The improvisations, particularly McLaughlin’s post-Hendrix machine-gun assaults on double-necked electric guitar and Jerry Goodman’s flights on electric violin, owe more to the freakouts that had been circulating in progressive rock circles than to jazz, based as they often are on ostinatos on one chord. These still sound genuinely thrilling today on CD, as McLaughlin and Goodman battle Jan Hammer’s keyboards, Rick Laird’s bass, and especially Billy Cobham’s hard-charging drums, whose jazz-trained technique pushed the envelope for all rock drummers. What doesn’t date so well are the composed medium- and high-velocity unison passages that are played in such tight lockstep that they can’t breathe. There is also time out for quieter, reflective numbers that are drenched in studied spirituality (“A Lotus on Irish Streams”) or irony (“You Know You Know”); McLaughlin was to do better in that department with less-driven colleagues elsewhere in his career. Aimed with absolute precision at young rock fans, this record was wildly popular in its day, and it may have been the cause of more blown-out home amplifiers than any other record this side of Deep Purple. –AllMusic Review by Richard S. Live 1967 features performances from The Monkees’ exhilarating U.S. tour. The group performed hits including “I Wanna Be Free” and “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” featured on this twelve-track collection. The recording captures the band at its rawest.

This title — which appeared on vinyl and cassette sans the four “solo” non-Monkees’ performances — was the first of its kind. It contained live recordings by the Monkees — a fake pop band made up of four actors. Because their pre-teen audience so bought into the phenomenon, that quartet of actors — Mickey Dolenz (drums/vocals), Michael Nesmith (guitar/vocals/percussion), Davy Jones (vocals/percussion/drums), and Peter Tork (bass/keyboards/banjo/vocals) — toured around North America during the summer of 1967 performing to packed audiences and, yes, playing their own instruments. Although technology was not exactly on their sides, Monkees’ TV show producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider made a valiant attempt to document the mania created at these live “happenings”. After an initial dry run on a monophonic tape machine manned by crew member/photographer Winton Teel, the outcome was deemed favorable to try and record on professional four-track equipment that would be attended/recorded by Monkees’ concurrent studio producer Hank Cicalo. He recorded the final three gigs on their transcontinental sojourn August 25-27 in Seattle, Portland, and Spokane, respectively. Unfortunately, upon completion, the tapes were pronounced unacceptable and ultimately shelved. Fast-forward nearly two decades later when MTV’s Monkees’ marathon (broadcast on February 23, 1986) sparked a fresh generation of fans. The new CD medium was perfect for resurrecting not only their old recordings, but the arrival of archival projects such as this. Immediately evident is the sheer din of screaming one might expect at such an event. However, considering that the four individuals had no way of hearing themselves — on-stage monitor systems were still several years away — they actually don’t sound too bad. Each night contained more or less the same routine and song list, so what is presented on Live 1967 is a composite of a typical show taken from the three nights denoted above. Those familiar with the hit (studio) versions might be surprised at the garage band primitiveness that is more often than not a result of un-tuned instruments and off-key harmonies. The CD features each of the guys in a spotlight performance. Although Tork’s take on the traditional folk tune “Cripple Creek” has no other musicians on it, the other three are supported by a then (and still) relatively unknown five-piece pop combo called the Sundowners. They are heard behind Nesmith’s update of Willie Dixon’s “You Can’t Judge a Book (By Looking at the Cover),” while Dolenz takes on Ray Charles via the Godfather of Soul with his reading of “I’ve Got a Woman,” and Jones reverts back to the Great White Way for a charming take of “I’m Gonna Build a Mountain”.” The conclusion contains what is arguably the best of the lot as the self-contained quartet returns to rip and tear through “I’m a Believer,” “Randy Scouse Git,” and “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone”.” Despite the lack of anything resembling fidelity, the out of control sonic surroundings suit the considerable transfer of energy between audience and performers. Parties wishing to hear these concerts in their entirety are strongly encouraged to locate a copy of the four-disc Summer 1967: The Complete U.S. Concert Recordings (2001).

Another #1 album, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, LTD. came out in November ’67 and debuted the all-time Monkees classics “Pleasant Valley Sunday” — a #3 pop single written by Goffin & King — and “Words,” a Boyce & Hart number, which hit #11. It also features their inspired version of Harry Nilsson’s “Cuddly Toy,” making the Monkees one of the major acts to cover his work. It has been certified platinum.

After wresting control of the Monkees from Don Kirschner and recording the very good Headquarters album as a mostly self-contained unit, the bandmembers returned to using studio musicians to augment their sound as well as looking outside the group for the majority of the songs on their fourth album, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. Whatever the reason for the decision, the resulting album is one of their best. Filled with hooky pop like “She Hangs Out” and the Harry Nilsson-penned “Cuddly Toy,” psychedelic ravers “Daily Nightly” and “Star Collector” (both of which feature the newly invented Moog synthesizer), Mike Nesmith-produced rockers (“Love Is Only Sleeping”), and ballads (the lovely “Don’t Call on Me”), the album is filler-free and fun-filled. That it contains three of their finest songs (“Words,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” and the song that “invented” country-rock for better or for worse, “What Am I Doing Hangin’ ‘Round?”) means that not only is it one of the Monkees’ best, it is one of 1967’s best. To think that both this album and Headquarters came out the same year! Most bands would be lucky to have two albums this good come out their entire career. Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. is a must-have for any fan of smart, fun, and exciting ’60s pop. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Tony Bennett is joined by pianist Bill Charlap in The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern. Including popular tunes “The Way You Look Tonight”, “I Won’t Dance” and many more!

The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern functions as something of an answer to its predecessor, Cheek to Cheek. That 2014 duet album with Lady Gaga was suitably brassy and snazzy, relying on well-loved standards and pizzazz — the kind of thing designed to stoke nostalgia vibes — but The Silver Lining is a purer jazz record, an intimate songbook collaboration with pianist Bill Charlap; the difference can be heard simply in comparing the versions of “I Won’t Dance” that pop up on the two albums — the Gaga swings boldly, the Charlap rendition carries a wry resignation. Songbooks have been a standard item for Bennett throughout the years but if The Silver Lining recalls any specific album in the vocalist’s discography, it’s The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album, a record released in 1975 when Bennett dropped off the major-label radar and his name was perhaps as well-known to record buyers as that of Evans. While there may be a slight wattage differential between Bennett and Charlap, the difference is due to scale: Bennett is a household name; Charlap is a star among modern mainstream jazz fans. Accordingly, Bennett treats the pianist as an equal, giving him plenty of room to spin out long, liquid solos, passages that seem to glide out imperceptibly from his understated support. Often, The Silver Lining features little more than just the singer and the pianist — when they’re augmented by other musicians, it’s just bass and drums, offering a bit of rhythm and color — and this sparseness never seems austere due to the inherent warmth of the musicians’ easy interplay, not to mention their individual voices. Both aspects are subtly showcased on The Silver Lining, and it’s that delicate dance, where Bennett and Charlap enjoy playing together and apart, that makes this so charming.
