This assortment of seasonal cheer features Stevie Wonder applying his inimitable vocal technique to familiar and unusual Yuletide songs, with predictably successful results. In “Someday at Christmas” he yearns for a Christmas when “Men won’t be boys/playing with bombs like kids play with toys”–this album was recorded during the Vietnam War–striking a plaintive tone not often found on Christmas albums. Other high points include his joyous reading of “Little Drummer Boy,” with its steadily building martial beat, and chestnuts like “Silver Bells” and “The Christmas Song,” which Wonder delivers with total assurance, as well as a palpable sense of fun. He even brings a measure of soul to more sentimental numbers like “One Little Christmas Tree” and “Twinkle Twinkle Little Me,” while “What Christmas Means to Me” invokes the bubbling bass line of the Capitols’ “Cool Jerk,” and features a blissful harp solo.

When it comes to holiday records emitted from the shadows of the mighty Motown hit factory on West Grand Boulevard, few could match the quality and quantity from one of their key artists. This collection from Mr. Wonder dates back to the first golden age of his catalog from the mid-’60s and relies on the successful stomping Motown formula from the first song to the last. A well-balanced mix of traditional and modern standards keeps the disc interesting, with the unquestionable highlight being “What Christmas Means to Me,” a vibrant original tune that has undeniably become Motown’s finest Christmas anthem and a holiday standard in its own right. Those looking to spice up their musical eggnog during the holiday season would be well served in giving this solid collection a few spins. –AllMusic Review by Rob Theakston

Stevie Wonder had a record-breaking year in 1984 thanks to the song I Just Called To Say I Love You from this soundtrack. The song won an Academy Award, went to number one on charts around the world, and became Motown’s all time biggest-selling single internationally. The soundtrack album, containing other songs from Wonder and featuring Dionne Warwick, sold a million copies in the US and was certified gold or platinum in several other countries. This wasn’t Wonder’s first foray into movie music: he had previously recorded the soundtrack to the documentary The Secret Life Of Plants in 1979. Years later, he enjoyed considerable success in the early 1990s with his soundtrack to director Spike Lee’s film Jungle Fever.

Stevie Wonder’s career in the 1980s was a source of frustration to the fans he had earned in the ’60s and ’70s. In 1982, there were a few new songs on a greatest-hits album and a duet with Paul McCartney. Then came this soundtrack to a Gene Wilder comedy that was simultaneously more of a pop vocal album than most soundtracks and yet less than a full-fledged Wonder record. The gold-selling number one hit that resulted was the sappy “I Just Called to Say I Love You,” a formulaic TV commercial-in-the-making. “Love Light in Flight” also hit, and the album featured Dionne Warwick on two duets and one solo. This was a pleasant record, but slight, and after four years, Wonder fans wanted more than that.

Originally recorded over three sessions with producer Jack Endino at Seattle’s Reciprocal Recording Studios in December 1988 and January 1989, Bleach was released in June of ’89 and unequivocally/unsurprisingly remains Sub Pop’s very favorite Nirvana full-length album. The album initially sold 40,000 copies, but was brought into the international spotlight following the release and worldwide success of their 1991 sophomore effort, Nevermind. Subsequently Bleach went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the US alone. This 20th Anniversary Edition has been re-mastered from the original tapes at Sterling Sound in a session overseen by producer Jack Endino.

This edition includes an unreleased live recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. The show features performances of “Love Buzz,” “About a Girl” and a cover of The Vaselines’ song “Molly’s Lips” and has been re-mixed from the original tapes by Endino.

This is one case where the legend really precedes the record itself. Cut for about 600 dollars in Jack Endino’s studio over just a matter of days, this captures Nirvana at a formative stage, still indebted to the murk that became known as grunge, yet not quite finding their voice as songwriters. Which isn’t to say that they were devoid of original material, since even at this stage Kurt Cobain illustrated signs of his considerable songcraft, particularly on the minor-key ballad “About a Girl” and the dense churn of “Blew.” A few songs come close to that level, but that’s more a triumph of sound than structure, as “Negative Creep” and “School” get by on attitude and churn, while the cover of “Love Buzz” winds up being one of the highlights because this gives a true menace to their sound, thanks to its menacing melody. The rest of it sinks into the sludge, as the group itself winds up succumbing to grinding sub-metallic riffing that has little power, due to lack of riffs and lack of a good drummer. Bleach is more than a historical curiosity since it does have its share of great songs, but it isn’t a lost classic — it’s a debut from a band that shows potential but haven’t yet achieved it.

Genre: Alternative
Release Date: 1993/2013
Label:
Duration: 03:43:09
Quality: FLAC 96kHz/24bit

This Super Deluxe Edition features more than 70 remastered, remixed, rare and unreleased recordings, including B-sides, compilation tracks, never-before-heard demos and live material (including the complete “Live & Loud” show from Seattle’s Pier 48 on December 13, 1993) featuring the final touring lineup of Cobain, Novoselic, Grohl, and Pat Smear, plus never-before-released bonus material.

To say that Nirvana’s third and ultimately final studio album In Utero was 1993’s most polarizing record would be the understatement of a decade. The unadorned sonic rawness of Steve Albini’s recording laid bare every primal nuance of the most confrontational yet vulnerable material Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl would ever record. And with its 1991 predecessor Nevermind having sold some 30 million copies, singlehandedly returning honest rock ‘n’ roll to the top of the pop charts, In Utero was essentially the first record Nirvana would make with any expectations from the public. So from the opening quasi-shamble melodics of “Serve The Servants” through the bittersweet closing strains of “All Apologies,” In Utero was the sound of the most incredible yet conflicted rock ‘n’ roll band of the era at the peak of its powers coming to terms with a generational spokes-band mantle they’d never seen coming—and ultimately surmounting these struggles to make the record they needed to make. As Rolling Stone’s David Fricke said in his review at the time, “In Utero is a lot of things—brilliant, corrosive, enraged and thoughtful, most of them all at once. But more than anything, it’s a triumph of the will”.

Ailyn Perez & Stephen Costello – Love Duets (2014) [Classical, Qobuz, FLAC 44.1kHz/24bit]

Title: Love Duets

Richard Tucker Award-winners Stephen Costello and Ailyn Prez — dubbed “America’s fastest-rising husband-and-wife opera stars” (Associated Press) — look forward to releasing their first album together: a recording of romantic love duets by Verdi, Puccini, Bernstein, and others, recorded with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Patrick Summers’s leadership in London. The album is the couple’s first release as exclusive recording artists for Warner Classics.

Prez explains: “Given our great love for our art and each other, I’m really looking forward to joining our voices in some of my favourite roles and operatic duets.” Costello adds: “To be on a label for which so many incredible artists have recorded is a huge honour. I am also honoured to share this album with two great artists — my wife, Ailyn Prez, and Maestro Patrick Summers. I am truly humbled!”

The young American soprano and tenor met at Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts, where an onstage romance in Puccini’s most beloved opera kindled the flames of a real-life passion. This season, Prez and Costello appear in performance together across the globe, headlining in La traviata in London, Berlin, Hamburg, and San Francisco, and giving concerts in New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

The U.S. duo of soprano Ailyn Prez and tenor Stephen Costello has garnered considerable publicity in its home country, and now with this new collaboration with the venerable BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, they seem poised to gain a round of admirers across the Atlantic as well. Opera cognoscenti may conclude that their success is due in large part to having the field to themselves right now: opera companies and symphonic programmers, like those in the folk field who roll over and put their hands in the air for the Swell Season and the Civil Wars, can’t resist the spectacle of a husband-and-wife team who seem to be experiencing the emotions they sing about. Prez’s voice for many will have a rather plummy quality, while Costello’s tenor at times plows ahead with little regard to pitch. But the duo is canny in picking their music, and it’s easy to see the appeal in spite of such objections. The album is dedicated to the memory of Richard Tucker, and the duo exploits the musical mix characteristic of that great American crowd-pleaser, combining verismo and semipopular material with musicals standing in for Tucker’s beloved operetta. The whole thing seems to work, in spite of individual moments that don’t stand up to scrutiny, and the BBC Philharmonic under Patrick Summers takes this kind of basic emotional appeal on its own terms. It’s worth watching Prez and Costello to see where they go next. –AllMusic Review by James Manheim

Artist: Alessia Cara
Title: Know-It-All
Genre: Pop
Release Date: 2015
Label: Def Jam
Duration: 47:31
Quality: FLAC 44.1kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks

Rising Canadian pop star Alessia Cara follows up the success of her debut EP Four Pink Walls with this full-length album, featuring songwriting and production collaborations with duo Pop & Oak. Know-It-All includes her breakthrough hit Here along with the four other tracks from the EP and songs written for the album. This deluxe edition contains three bonus tracks, among them an alternate, stripped-down version of Here.

“… (Here) did so much for me. It’s cool and strange that it happened. It wasn’t even supposed to be a single, it just kind of grew online. It’s a huge thing that I never thought would be that thing. It’s been a crazy, strange experience.” –Alessia Cara

The teenage wallflower anthem “Here,” Alessia Cara’s debut for Def Jam, was released in May 2015 and sounded nothing like the hits — such as the Weeknd’s “Earned It,” Omarion’s “Post to Be,” and Rihanna’s “B**** Better Have My Money” — that were at or around the top of Billboard’s R&B chart. Even with instant recognition of the Isaac Hayes sample that drives it, “Here” sounded distinct, not only because its tracing of social anxieties was so palpable, but also because Cara sounded remarkably poised for her age. Three months later, the song appeared on Four Pink Walls, the debut EP from the Canadian singer and songwriter. None of the other four songs eclipsed that Top Ten R&B single, but each one of them was sturdy, fusing and switching between smart pop and R&B constructions as Cara sang about growing up and falling in love. The EP closed with the title track, a melodious and triumphant piece of hip-hop soul where Cara reflected on her early success, knowing she had it in her while in a state of dazed disbelief nonetheless. Four Pink Walls is repeated as the first half of the full-length Know-It-All. Its all-new second half begins with “Wild Things,” a theme for a clique of mild-mannered misfits, and concludes with the tactful “Scars to Your Beautiful,” addressed to girls and women with a negative self-image. Between those two numbers, Cara straightforwardly longs and seeks stability, and then uses substance abuse and amusement park metaphors for a bumpy relationship. At all times, Cara is levelheaded, wise beyond her late-teen years — something that comes across through her observations — and she has a measured delivery and faintly grainy voice to match. Discovered through YouTube, she was smartly set up with Andrew “Pop” Wansel and Warren “Oak” Felder, whose input here as producers and fellow songwriters complements what they’ve done beside the likes of Chrisette Michele, Alicia Keys, Tamia, and especially Elle Varner. Upcoming songwriter Coleridge Tillman (aka Sebastian Kole) also contributes. Going by the level of potential shown here, it’s evident that Cara will eventually need a lot less creative assistance. –AllMusic Review by Andy Kellman

Called “one of the great voices of today”, Alexis Cole has been compared to classic jazz singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Anita O’Day. Her luxurious voice and innovative interpretations make her an instant favorite with audiences of all ages. Cole is the recipient of a Swing Journal Gold Disk award, and has won the NY Jazzmobile and Montreux Jazz Festival vocal competitions…

This time out, Alexis Cole goes further back in time with her quartet of guitarist Saul Rubin, saxophonist/clarinetist Dan Block, bassist Pat O’Leary and drummer Phil Stewart to a more genteel time when sheet music was the most common method of dissemination of popular tunes. With her relaxed style, clear articulation, unhurried, conversational approach and allknowing sense of cool, Cole and her crew strike a swinging accord on nuggets like “Ain’t We Got Fun,” “Bimini Bay,” “Whippoorwill,” the buoyantly swinging title track and ten other tunes from yesteryear in this engaging retro revue. Everything goes down nice ‘n’ easy on this luxurious outing, and Alexis delivers with timeless charm from track to track.

Part of the Chesky Binaural + Series, all recorded with a single microphone, the band and singer appear right before you with this spacious, lush and multidimensional recording. You will hear some of the most natural and pure vocals ever recorded of a jazz singer.

Cuban pianist and composer Alfredo Rodrguez explores his memories of Cuba, the people and the culture he left behind and finds his new place on this release, co-produced by Rodrguez’s champion and mentor, Quincy Jones. Featuring a superb ensemble that includes bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding, The Invasion Parade contains nine tracks including originals by Rodrguez as well as evergreens such as Guantanamera.

“When you live in your own country, you are immersed in that reality and you’re not necessarily conscious of all the different elements that make it what it is. I breathed Cuban music. Being outside that reality gives me a different perspective. Creating and playing this music has been like finding out who I am, all over again.” –Alfredo Rodrguez

The title of Cuban expatriate jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez’s sophomore offering for Mack Avenue Records is inspired by an annual parade in the island city of Santiago that celebrates the nation’s independence. On the follow-up to 2011’s Sounds of Space, Rodriguez delves deeply into the sounds of his native land with an incendiary approach. Co-produced with Quincy Jones, his lineup for the set includes saxophonists Billy Carrion and Romn Fili, drummer/percussionist Henry Cole, vocalist/percussionist Pedrito Martinez, flutist Javier Porta, and alternating bassists Peter Slavov and Esperanza Spalding. Rodriguez is an exceptionally gifted pianist and arranger, and he delved deep into Cuba’s vast musical variety from guajiro to Yoruban Santeria music, comparsas, timba, Caribbean folk, and, of course, Afro-Cuban jazz, and wound in a thoroughly modern, utterly enchanting mix of originals, folk songs, and classics. Standouts include his bold, dissonant, nearly political reading of “Guantanamera,” the lithe “A Santa Brbara,” mold-breaking readings of standards such as “Quizs, Quizs, Quizs” and “Veinte Aos” with bold rhythmic and harmonic extrapolations, and “Timberobot,” a tough workout with flying arpeggios. –AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

Animal Collective have many, many strengths but brevity has never really been one of them. Until now, that is, because their M.O. for the follow-up to 2012’s Centipede Hz was “no B.S, get in, get out material.” Recorded at the Hollywood studio where The Beach Boys created Pet Sounds, and inspired by “Cubism, Dadaism, and the distorted way those artists viewed the world”, Painting With is every bit as ambitious as previous Animal Collective records. And yet, out of the jumble of complex polyrhythms, psychedelic synth effects and hyperactive vocal harmonies, the trio have conjured a set that’s flab-free and packed full of pop hooks.

Wielding the lineup of Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), and Geologist (Brian Weitz) — the same as on their most popular LP to date, 2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion — beloved indie experimenters Animal Collective show no signs of dulling with age on their tenth long-player, Painting With. The album does, however, mark a change in approach. Bursting with creatively wacky pop tunes using a vibrant, at times ’50s sci-fi-evoking electronics palette, Animal Collective could have more accurately called this their Devo album instead of “our Ramones record” as Geologist did in a pre-release Rolling Stone interview. The point is taken, though: forms are tightened, artificial reverb shed, experimental excursions not eliminated but greatly limited, and a premium is placed on lively beats and pleasing harmonies. Fans shouldn’t worry that they’ve produced a collection of aerodynamic jingles, however; the songs still sound artful and uniquely Animal Collective. For instance, rhythmically complex tandem vocals skip and trip through the album, as on the exacting “Lying in the Grass” and “Hocus Pocus” (which also features John Cale on viola). Lyrics are repeated syllable by syllable until the two singers join for moments of harmony, keeping the melodies bouncing like a Max Fleischer cartoon. “Summing the Wretch” is a polyrhythmic ditty that uses these shadow vocals and a brisk tempo to challenge any attempted singalongs (imagine a stimulant-addled “Sleigh Bells”). Elsewhere, “On Delay” is the glitchiest song on the record but governed by fat, driving drum tones and a loose structure that glides along intermittent, railroad switch-like chord progressions, though at roller coaster pace. If that doesn’t sound fun enough, samples of the Surfaris’ “Wipeout” (“FloriDada”) and dialogue from TV’s The Golden Girls (“Golden Gal”) also grace the album. Painting With was recorded in Studio 3 of EastWest Studios in Hollywood, California, the same space where many legendary albums including the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds were recorded. Undeniably great sounding, the record puts Animal Collective’s brightest colors forward and, if history is any indication, is no predictor whatsoever of what they may do next.

Certainly one of the most important sessions in Pepper’s entire recording career, if not the history of jazz, this classic 1959 recording features the legendary sax player backed by an astounding big band that includes drummer Mel Lewis and alto sax icon Bud Shank. The album features brilliant arrangements by Marty Paich (who would later orchestrate for artists like Carly Simon and Elton John).

This is a true classic. Altoist Art Pepper is joined by an 11-piece band playing Marty Paich arrangements of a dozen jazz standards from the bop and cool jazz era. Trumpeter Jack Sheldon has a few solos, but the focus is very much on the altoist who is in peak form for this period. The reissue adds two additional versions of “Walkin'” and one of “Donna Lee” to the original program. Throughout, Pepper sounds quite inspired by Paich’s charts which feature the band as an active part of the music rather than just in the background. Highlights of this highly enjoyable set include “Move,” “Four Brothers,” “Shaw Nuff,” “Anthropology,” and “Donna Lee,” but there is not a single throwaway track to be heard. Essential music for all serious jazz collections.

Release Date: 1973/2013

Yessongs is the first live album from the English progressive rock band Yes, released on Atlantic Records. It reached number 7 on the UK Albums Chart and number 12 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. The album was certified gold in 1973 and platinum in 1998 by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album is formed of recordings from their supporting world tours for their studio albums, Fragile and Close to the Edge, between February and December 1972. A concert film of the same name was released in 1975 that documents the band’s performances at London’s Rainbow Theatre on 15 and 16 December 1972.

In many ways, the extravagance of this package equates the profligacy of the prog rock combo themselves. After all, how else but on a triple-LP collection could one hope to re-create (and/or contain) an adequate sampling of Yes’ live presentation? Especially since their tunes typically clocked in in excess of ten minutes. Although they had turned in five studio long-players, the vast majority of Yessongs (1973) is drawn from their three most recent endeavors The Yes Album (1970), Fragile (1971), and Close to the Edge (1972). There are two exceptions, the first being the “Opening (Excerpt from “Firebird Suite”)” — which comes from the 1969 Boston Symphony Orchestra’s recording, conducted by Seiji Ozawa. The other is Rick Wakeman’s keyboard solo “Excerpts from ‘The Six Wives Of Henry VIII’.” Yes had just undergone a personnel change shortly after concluding work on Close to the Edge as Bill Bruford (percussion) left to join King Crimson in July of 1972. Bruford can be heard on “Perpetual Change,” as well as the medley of “Long Distance Runaround” and “The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus).” Enthusiasts keen on various and arguably irrelevant minutia should note the spelling of “praimaturus” as credited on Yessongs. It is slightly different from Fragile, which is denoted as “praematurus.” That bit of trivia aside, the new lineup finds Alan White (drums), quite ably filling Bruford’s shoes, alongside Jon Anderson (vocals), Steve Howe (guitars), Chris Squire (bass/vocals), and Rick Wakeman (keyboards).

One of their trademarks has always been an ability to re-create their often densely layered sound in concert. They effortlessly pull off the tricky chord progressions and changes in time signatures of “Siberian Khatru” and a sublime “Heart of the Sunrise,” which unquestionably bests the dexterity of its carefully crafted studio counterpart. Both Howe and Squire’s respective solos during “The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)” are highlights as they give the entire unit an opportunity to show off their capacity for dramatic dynamics. The remainder of Yessongs is similarly strong, particularly the note-perfect “Close to the Edge,” and the inspired concluding instrumental jam during “Starship Trooper.” However, one criticism that can be leveled at the entire Yessongs release is the less than optimal audio quality throughout. The sound is generally muddy with no real fidelity to speak of and an even less precise stereoscape. But until someone goes back to the multi-tracks and remixes them for 21st century ears, this is as good as it gets when documenting Yes during this seminal transition period.

Tracklist:
01 — Opening (Excerpt From “Firebird Suite”)
02 — Siberian Khatru
03 — Heart Of The Sunrise

For this, their second album for Atlantic Records, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Tony Kaye, Bill Bruford and Peter Banks pulled together one of the most cohesive albums in their early seventies output. Featuring many of their fan and radio favorites as “Sweet Dreams”, “Time And A Word” and the amazing prog rock classic “Astral Traveller”, Time And A Word is another great instalment in this band’s iconic legacy.

Yes’ second (and least successful) album was a transitional effort; the group trying for a more produced and sophisticated sound through the use of an orchestra. Even so, the results weren’t conventional, because the group didn’t tone down or turn down its sound. Much of Time and a Word relies on bold, highly animated performances by Bill Bruford, Chris Squire, and Tony Kaye. Additionally, by this time the group was developing a much tauter ensemble than was evident on their first LP, so there’s no lack of visceral excitement. “No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed” was a bold opening, a highly amplified, frenzied adaptation of the Richie Havens song, melded with Jerome Moross’s title music from the movie The Big Country. Somewhat more successful musically is “Then,” which keeps the orchestral accompaniment to a minimum and allows Kaye and Banks to stretch out on organ and guitar. “Everydays” is highlighted by Anderson’s ethereal vocals and Kaye’s dueting with the orchestra. A surprising amount of the material here seems rather tuneless, but the group was solidifying its sound and, in the process, forcing Banks out of the lineup, despite some beautiful moments for him (and Tony Kaye) on the prettiest parts of “The Prophet,” a piece that also contains fragments of music that anticipate Yes’ work right up through Tales from Topographic Oceans. “Astral Traveller,” as a title, anticipates the themes of future group work, though they still don’t have the dexterity to pull off the tempo changes they’re trying for. By the time the record was completed, Banks was out of the band, which is why Steve Howe, his successor, ended up pictured on the cover of most editions.

The fourth studio album by British prog-rock legends Yes stands among the band’s greatest and most commercially successful work. Marrying the complexity of classical music (the album includes reworked excerpts of Brahms’ 4th Symphony) the melodicism of pop, and the instrumental prowess of progressive jazz, the record took the recording industry by storm, sitting on the Billboard 200 for 46 weeks and eventually going gold.

Fragile was Yes’ breakthrough album, propelling them in a matter of weeks from a cult act to an international phenomenon; not coincidentally, it also marked the point where all of the elements of the music (and more) that would define their success for more than a decade fell into place fully formed. The science-fiction and fantasy elements that had driven the more successful songs on their preceding record, The Yes Album, were pushed much harder here, and not just in the music but in the packaging of the album:the Roger Dean-designed cover was itself a fascinating creation that seemed to relate to the music and drew the purchaser’s attention in a manner that few records since the heyday of the psychedelic era could match. Having thrown original keyboard player Tony Kaye overboard early in the sessions — principally over his refusal to accept the need for the Moog synthesizer in lieu of his preferred Hammond organ — the band welcomed Rick Wakeman into its ranks. His use of the Moog, among other instruments, coupled with an overall bolder and more aggressive style of playing, opened the way for a harder, hotter sound by the group as a whole; bassist Chris Squire sounds like he’s got his amp turned up to “12,” and Steve Howe’s electric guitars are not far behind, although the group also displayed subtlety where it was needed. The opening minute of “Roundabout,” the album opener — and the basis for the edited single that would reach number 13 on the Billboard charts and get the group onto AM radio in a way that most other prog rock outfits could only look upon with envy — was dominated by Howe’s acoustic guitar and Bill Bruford’s drums, and only in the middle section did the band show some of what they could do with serious amperage. Elsewhere on the record, as on “South Side of the Sky,” they would sound as though they were ready to leave the ground (and the planet), between the volume and intensity of their playing. “Long Distance Runaround,” which also served as the B-side of the single, was probably the most accessible track here apart from “Roundabout,” but they were both ambitious enough to carry most listeners on to the heavier sides at the core of this long player. The solo tracks by the members were actually a necessity: they needed to get Fragile out in a hurry to cover the cost of the keyboards that Wakeman had added to the group’s sonic arsenal. But they ended up being more than filler. Each member, in effect, took a “bow” in mostly fairly serious settings, and Squire’s “The Fish” and Howe’s “Mood For a Day” pointed directly to future, more substantial projects as well as taking on a life of their own on-stage. If not exactly their peak, Fragile was as perfect a record as the group would ever make, and just as flawless in its timing as its content.

1980 was a great year for the legendary Yes. While the Close To The Edge line-up was taking a break, founding member Chris Squire maintained the legendary status of the band along with long- time band mates Steve Howe & Alan White, with new members Trevor Horn & Geoff Downes (The Buggles), and created the harder rocking masterpiece, Drama. With stand outs like “Into The Lens”, it was easy to hear why this new edgy Yes sound truly resonated in the eighties. Check out the amazing musicianship on “Run Through The Light” and “Tempus Fugit”, all of which made Drama the classic album it is today!

For this one album, ex-Buggles Geoffrey Downes and Trevor Horn were drafted in to replace Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman. It rocks harder than other Yes albums, and for classically inclined fans, it was a jarring departure; but it was a harbinger of Yes and Asia albums to come. A newly emboldened Chris Squire lays down aggressive rhythms with Alan White, and Steve Howe eschews his usual acoustic rags and flamenco licks for a more metallic approach, opting for sheets of electric sound. Prime cuts include the doom-laden “Machine Messiah” and the manic ska inflections of “Tempus Fugit.” Despite the promise of this new material, the band soon fell apart; Horn went into production, Howe and Downes joined Asia, and Squire and White toyed and then gave up on a pair-up with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, which was to be titled XYZ (i.e., Ex-Yes and Zeppelin).

Prog-rock band, Yes, is one of the most exhilarating live acts in music history. The band’s live interaction is captured in all its glory on their second live album, Yesshows. Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Alan White and Steve Howe are joined by Rick Wakeman for a variety of tracks. The band’s contagious live energy, intricate melodies and riveting dynamics are in exquisite form. They performed hits including “Time And A Word,” “Going For The One” and “Don’t Kill The Whale”.

The second official concert package from Yes contains tunes recorded over a span of two years (1976-1978) and two different incarnations of the band. Like its live predecessor Yessongs (1973), Yesshows finds the combo during one of their states of perpetual change. Jon Anderson (vocals), Steve Howe (guitar), Chris Squire (bass/vocals), and Alan White (drums) are joined by Rick Wakeman (keyboards) on a majority of the selections. The exceptions being “Gates of Delirium” from Relayer (1974) and the Tales from Topographic Oceans’ (1973) epic “Ritual” — which is presented in two parts — and has Patrick Moraz (keyboards) in Wakeman’s stead. The original concept contained a few features that would have been akin to Yessongs. They debated as to whether they should make it another triple-LP and feature Tales from Topographic Oceans in its entirety, like Close to the Edge had been done on Yessongs. Undecided, they made a rough mix of a two-album incarnation, but then shelved it in order to focus their attentions on creating new music. Purportedly, that unapproved (by Yes, anyway) version was cleaned up by the record company and released for the holiday shopping frenzy of 1980. As issued, the seven tracks hang well together and provide enthusiasts an opportunity to hear a mixture of older and newer material. Best of all, Yes retain their enviable ability to ably re-create the complex and challenging passages with a soul that is occasionally lacking from the studio counterparts. Reaching back nearly a decade is an excellent update of the optimistic “Aquarian Age” anthem and the title composition of their second platter, “Time and a Word.” It is enveloped by a pair of equally well-executed sides from Going for the One (1977). Here, both the opener “Parallels” and the song “Going for the One” exceed the comparatively sterile non-live readings. Particularly endearing and inspired is Anderson’s off-key voice crack during the high-octane chorus of the latter. The more involved works — especially the Moraz performances on “The Gates of Delirium” and the nearly half-hour “Ritual” — are fuelled by a continuous energy. They build on the structure established from the respective long-players, yet even the most intricate elements and dynamics are amplified in their decisiveness and command. Anderson’s intimacy and passion fuse on the closer “Wondrous Stories,” almost as if releasing the audience from one last embrace.

Chart History/Awards
— Reached #10 on the Billboard 200.
— Reached #8 in the U.K.

Tormato is the prog-rock band’s ninth studio classic. Yes fans have praised the album as a truly inspiring masterwork. The Platinum hit includes “On The Silent Wings Of Freedom,” “Future Times/Rejoice” and the international smash “Don’t Kill The Whale.” Tormato reached the Top Ten in the U.K. and in the United States. This important piece of music is widely considered one of the band’s finest recordings.

The ’70s model of Yes runs out of gas. Recorded in a morale slump and an impending haze of drink, Tormato’s decent tunes are sabotaged by Rick Wakeman’s increasing penchant for cheesy textures and the band’s thin overall sound. “Don’t Kill the Whale” was their last successful single for years; the soaring “Onward” almost but not quite redeems the twee silliness of “Arriving UFO” and “Circus of Heaven.” Of special interest is the pounding “On the Silent Wings of Freedom,” which pushes Chris Squire and Alan White to the front of the mix, establishing the kind of aggressive and straightforward rhythms that would propel the band through the ’80s. Bass freaks, take note: this tune also marks one of the few appearances of the Dipthong pedal, accounting for Squire’s distinctive “bow bow bow” sound.
